What is it?

The Portuguese electronic passport is an individual’s travel document, which allows the bearer to enter and leave national territory, as well as the territory of other States that recognize the document’s function.

Who may request a Passport

Any Portuguese citizen is allowed to own a passport.

Passport must be requested in person. For those under 18 years of age, citizens suffering any mental disability, the passport may be requested by the parents or legal guardians.

Passports for minors

Minors, when not accompanied by those without parental authority or custody, may only enter and leave national territory when presenting proper authorization for that purpose.

The mentioned authorization should be a written document, dated and signed by their parents or legal guardians, legally certified, granting powers of accompanying to others, properly identified.

The authorization does not have a limited number of uses, within its validity, provided that it does not surpass one calendar year.

If not other period is mentioned, the authorization is valid for six months, as of the respective date.

Necessary documentation

National citizen’s identity card or citizen’s card valid and up to date, independently of the respective age.

Costs and Delivery time

The normal delivery time is 10 working days. For emergency cases – at the request of the applicant – a shorter delivery time can be established, with added costs.

Passport validity

The passport is valid for five years.

For children under the age of 4, the passport is valid for two years.

Cancellation and apprehension

The owner of a passport that has been lost, destroyed, stolen or misplaced must immediately inform the issuer, so that the passport can be cancelled.

Parents and guardians of minors or of individuals incapable of making decisions are responsible to alert the issuer on their behalf.

Consular authorities, when requested to responsible for the repatriation of national citizens bearers of passport, will retain the passport, which will only be given back after reimbursement of the costs paid by the State.

In the aforementioned situation, the repatriated will return to Portugal bearing a temporary passport or single travel documents.

Temporary Passport

A temporary passport is an individual travel document, which allows for the bearer to enter and leave national territory, for a limited time. A temporary passport should be replaced by a normal passport as soon as possible, even if it is within its validity period. The maximum validity of a temporary passport is six months.

Single Travel Documents

Single travel documents are issued to Portuguese nationals that are undocumented abroad and who, with urgency, cannot in due time provide substantial identification proof.

Single travel documents are issued by Consular authorities.

Validity

The single travel document is issued with the validity strictly necessary for the return to Portugal.
