What is it for?

Portuguese nationals living abroad should register at the Consulate General of Portugal.

This is necessary to obtain any official government document while abroad.

Registration is a consular act by which a Portuguese citizen’s identification is officially included in the archives of the consular post in whose jurisdiction they have established residence.

Registration can only be made by a Portuguese citizen upon presentation of their ID card or Citizen’s Card. An exception is made for Portuguese citizens under 10 years old.

Their registration can be made at the request of their legal representatives, who must be physically present at the consulate.

The registration can only be effective if the individual has Portuguese nationality. Upon verification of identification documents, the consular post will issue a registration certificate valid for five years.
