Divorce

 

How:

  • It is not possible to register a divorce through the Consulate.

 

  • Before registering your divorce in Portugal, you need to send the documents below to the Consulate by post mail (Consulate at Home).
  • The applicant should afterwards secure the services of an attorney of her trust (or through the Ordem dos Advogados - Portuguese Bar) in Portugal so that she may request the divorce to be decreed by the competent court of law.

 

Required documents:

  • Original divorce decree;
  • Translation of the divorce decree done by a notary public registered with the Consulate (check list here) OR by any other notary public as long as it is then authenticated by the county clerk;
  • Cover letter explaining the service you require and your contacts (email and cellphone number);
  • Self-addressed postmarked envelope;
  • Check payable to "Portuguese Consulate".

 

NOTE:

  • IMPORTANT: Make sure you send all of the required documents. Incomplete applications will not be accepted and will be returned.
